College Football Nation: Meet BYU

I felt this excellent article in the USA Today did a very fair job at capturing the essence of BYU's football program right now. It's interesting that BYU's football success seems to legitimize BYU as my alma-mater to those I live near and work with here in Texas who otherwise wouldn't be talking about Brigham Young University. Link for yourself: Mendenhall's Cougars are on a mission at Brigham Young.

PS: We're excited to be attending the game up at TCU this Thursday and see the Cougs in person for a change. Big, big game. Go Cougars!

I can't wait either Sal, even if we'll be sitting in the TCU section! I don't know if we'll be able to make it up the night before, but just in case you can, the BYU Football Fireside will be at the Carrollton Stake Center at 7:30 p.m. (CT)

The address, according to the 2008 BYU Football Fireside Schedule is, 4000 Nazarene Dr., Carrollton, TX

Just copy and paste that address into Google Maps. Anyone else planning on going up for the game and/or the fireside?

I stop in to view your blog every once in a while and I enjoy your thoughts very much. I want to tell you how wonderful Coach Mendenhall is and how important the team is to our family. BYU has a touching program called "Thursday's Heroes" where they invite people who have overcome trials in their lives to come to a practice and the team honors the person. My little grandson was honored by them last year. Kayden had a kidney transplant when he was just 2 years old and is an avid BYU football fan, so for this little 3-year-old boy to get the chance to meet the team was a dream come true. They were all so kind to him. Coach Mendenhall gave Kayden his own cap from off his head and told him how special the hat is and that he wanted Kayden to always be strong. Kayden still has this hat and wears it while he watches every BYU game. Kayden will never be able to play football because of his transplant, but he will be their biggest fan, as we all are. (And none of us have gone to BYU to school!) To read more about this special day visit Kayden's mother's blog and find November 16, 2007. http://transplantmommy.blogspot.com/search?updated-min=2007-01-01T00%3A00%3A00-08%3A00&updated-max=2008-01-01T00%3A00%3A00-08%3A00&max-results=47

Well, I didn't let on about how I was nervous that this could happen. It was quite a let down, to say the least. Hope it turns into the learning experience that BYU needs so that it learns to come out and play each game with the same fire and passion TCU showed.

It's kind of crazy how we can win a game by 20 and people act is we've lost. Or we can lose once in 17 tries and all of the sudden we're a pushover team...

That being said, our BCS chance is gone with just one loss. Maybe next year. Perhaps now we can get back to just enjoying football without all the pressure to win every game and win big. Kudos to TCU though. BYU hasn't been dominated like that in a LONG time. I hope you're recovered from the trauma of witnessing it first hand. ;)

I think it might turn out to be a blessing in disguise. TCU has just done us a favor in showing how much we need to improve to truly compete at a national level and REALLY make a run for the BCS.
